Obama Locuta Est, Causa Finita Est

One of the phrases attributed to St. Augustine is, “Roman locuta est, causa finita est” — Rome has spoken, the cause is finished. Unfortunately, today’s Roman Catholic politicians have no trouble ignoring the moral teachings of the Pope. But for three years, the American Left has invested plenipotentiary authority in the words of The One, Barack Obama. Anyone who disagrees with him is treated as an heretic and suffers a concerted effort to force him out of the ranks of polite society. (Witness the president’s Saul Alinsky tactics against Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, Sean Hannity, John Boehner, etc.) Even private citizens who disagree with him are smeared with the modern equivalent of the untouchable labels branded on heretics of yore: racist, hatemonger, Nazi, angry, small-minded — or the most recent caricature, assault, or straw man to have percolated from their fervid imaginations. Since Saturday, non-progressives have been accused of being accessories to murder by virtually everyone on the Left, beginning with the investigating sheriff, Clarence Dupnik. Now hear ye the words of The One in his charitable and generous speech last night:

[I]f, as has been discussed in recent days, their death helps usher in more civility in our public discourse, let us remember it is not because a simple lack of civility caused this tragedy — it did not — but rather because only a more civil and honest public discourse can help us face up to the challenges of our nation in a way that would make them proud.

Obama locuta est, causa finita est.
